At this level of the game, simply having a proven track record of sales won’t be enough to set you apart. At the risk of oversimplifying this role, here are the main 5 things you’ll have to do to be successful:

  1. Own the relationships – this takes a genuine listener, a bit of grit and some quality time on the road to get in front of decision makers. A great Sales Representative will be able to anticipate client needs, then show up to provide the customer with a solid solution.
  2. Take care of the numbers and go out and win – set sales plans, the strategies to achieve them, meet your goals, and be able to clearly communicate your progress with customers and Company leadership.
  3. Be a creator – are you fluent in industrial/manufacturing lingo? You’ll be expected to translate client needs to the teams that produce their products. Your customers’ next great product may rely on your ability to convey their vision to the people who will bring that idea to life.
  4. Make sure our products are deep and wide – we don’t hide the fact that we want to be the main resource with our clients. In fact, our relationships should be strong enough that it’s us, not our competition, they call first when something goes wrong.
  5. Communicate well and often – you’ll be given a lot of autonomy to do the job, as well as the resources needed to back you. What we ask in return is open communication on how things are going. Whether client facing, or during internal Company meetings, excellent communication is a must.


Still thinking you’ve got what it takes? How do you stack up with these requirements?

  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in a business-oriented discipline
  • Genuine friendliness and superior interpersonal communication skills
  • 1-2 years of sales experience
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and customer/supplier relationship principles
  • Strong project management skills with the aptitude to meet deadlines and juggle multiple demands
  • A curious mind, advanced critical thinking abilities, sound judgment, and impeccable professionalism 
  • Computer proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Word

Two more things we should to tell you: This position does require travel – not enough to be considered a road warrior, but caring for accounts requires face time with them; also, there is some flexibility to where this position will be based and you will have the opportunity to work from home during times you’re not on the road.
